WASHINGTON, DC TRAVEL GUIDE

Written By Kayla Seah

This was my first time in Washington, DC and I don’t think it will be my last! I originally planned this entire trip for my boyfriend for Christmas, it was our weekend escape in between all the chaos and it ended up being exactly that. Here are the highlights of our trip:

GOOD EATS

Mintwood Place – This loud, warmly lit bistro is the perfect spot for a cozy dinner on a winter evening. Mintwood Place mixes French and American cuisine, creating comforting dishes that pair well with their amazing selection of wine. Our service was delightful and the atmosphere allowed us to spend our entire evening there, feeling no urgency to leave at all. Stand out dishes: 5 grain Risotto and Burrata & Kale Salad.

Plume – Elegance at it’s best. I fell completely in love with the whimsical yet classic decor Plume embodies. Past the chandeliers, marble checkered floors and rod iron gate, you are seated at a table fit for the queen. We ran out of time to have dinner here but we enjoyed breakfast, and most importantly afternoon tea, where the scones are served warm and the desserts on 3 tiers.

The Partisan – We stumbled upon this spot on our last night in DC. A low lit restaurant with a masculine decor, no wonder it’s run by two men who love their meat! A non-meat eater myself, I’ll have to take my guys word for his tasty burger, I myself had incredible scallops over a butternut squash puree. Note: most of the plates are sharing sizes so perhaps go with someone who really loves meat.

Fig & Olive – Modern, lively and suitable for a party of 5. The cocktails are spot on and the atmosphere is incredibly upbeat.

Check out the top 100 places to eat here.

STAY HERE

The Jefferson – We had the privilege of staying downtown Washington at the reputable boutique hotel, The Jefferson. It’s situated just blocks away from the White House, making our morning walks incredibly scenic. Our entire stay was nothing short of amazing, whether that be the service, decor, drinks or food, no detail goes unnoticed at The Jefferson. It’s historical decor making every corner you turn exciting and after a long day walking around the city, we wanted nothing more than to escape into the Book Room, by the wood burning fire with a glass of wine. It’s safe to say, The Jefferson Hotel is highly recommended.

MONUMENTS / MUSEUMS

If you check out yesterday’s post, you can see the beautiful grounds of the National Mall. Here you will find, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, National WWll Memorial, Vietnam war Memorial which are all within minutes from each other. They are truly incredibly to see in person!

Recommended: Spy Museum, Renwick Gallery

SHOPPING

Georgetown – Head to this historical neighbourhood for great shopping and entertainment.

THINGS TO KNOW

The Redskins – since this really was a gift to my boyfriend for Christmas, attending The Redskins football game was something I had pre-planned for us (this is his team and it was basically the glue that held this entire trip together.) If you haven’t been to an NFL game before, It truly was an amazing experience and I would recommend attending one just for the atmosphere alone.

Uber or Transit – Washington is really large and spread out, which makes walking a little overwhelming at times. Hit up their amazing transit system or do what we did and uber everywhere.
